## Use cases

- A CAD/CAM license dongle stays in the server room; workstations, laptops at home and VMs connect it when they need it. A busy dongle can be requested and the holder allows or declines.
- A USB device inside a Hyper-V virtual machine, which has no USB passthrough of its own: install USBOperator in the VM.
- License dongles, smart card readers and flash drives from several sites connected to one terminal server used over RDP.
- A printer or label printer attached to a computer in another room.
- A flash drive plugged into another computer; its files can also be copied without connecting it.
- Two computers on one network share a device without any account: both screens show the same 4-digit code.
- Teams and MSPs: roles (owner, admin, member, viewer), time-limited access, an API with tokens and signed webhooks.

## Getting started

1. Download and install USBOperator on both computers (a couple of minutes; it installs what it needs itself). On Linux: curl -fsSL https://usbop.com/install.sh | sudo sh
2. Sign in to the same account on both and confirm each computer.
3. Click Connect next to the device from the other computer.

## Good to know

- Supported: 64-bit Windows 10 (version 1809 or later), Windows 11, Windows Server 2019, 2022 and 2025. Not supported: Windows 7, 8, 8.1, Windows Server 2016.
- Linux with systemd (Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, Arch; x86-64 or ARM64): shares its USB devices and connects devices from your other computers; managed in the web account.
- Permission to install programs is needed; no IT person.
- Only computers added to your own account (and network neighbours you confirmed with a code) see your devices.
- End-to-end encryption between the computers (X25519, AES-256-GCM); the server relays ciphertext only and stores no file contents.
- Ordinary devices (drives, smart card readers and tokens, printers, Sentinel license dongles) are shared with one click;
  special devices (other license dongles such as CodeMeter or iLok, cameras, scanners, audio, network adapters, COM ports)
  only after the owner switches the policy. Keyboards and mice of the
  computer are never passed on. Drives are ejected safely before disconnecting.
- A device works on one computer at a time. If the connection drops, the device stays where it is plugged in;
  each device can be set to reconnect by itself. Updates install themselves when devices are free.

- No account: the program works right after installing — one device at a time between computers on the same network; no sign-up needed.
- Sign-up: 30 days of everything in Pro, then Free — 2 devices at a time, on the local network only (no internet connections), as many computers as you like, no time limit.
